Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder

Author: Caroline Fraser

Published November 21, 2017, by Metropolitan Books

Number of pages: 641

My Rating: 8 out of 10

Prairie Fires was a book that was chosen by someone in my book club.  I thought this was a book that I would have eventually picked to read myself if I had known about it.

I grew up reading Little House on the Prairie books so to read about the author and her life was extremely interesting to me.

There were only a couple of us in the book club who liked the book.  But it turned out that we were the only two who had read the Little House books or watched the Little House on the Prairie show.

The others just did not know that much about the books or Laura Ingalls Wilder herself.

It was a long book and kind of out of the realm of what we normally choose to read.

What Did I Like About Prairie Fires?

I liked this book because I enjoyed the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and I liked reading about her life.  I was not prepared for the things I read that I had not known before.

There were some surprises and a few sad moments.

I really liked reading about the relationship between Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter Rose.

Laura and Rose had a very dichotomous relationship. Because I never knew much about Rose, it was an interesting read for me.

Laura and Rose seemed to get along for the most part but there were times when Rose ignored her mother’s wishes and vice versa.  But no matter the strain that arose between the two of them, Laura was always there for Rose.

For years Rose blamed herself for something that had happened to the family when she was only about 4 years old. That event seemed to affect her for the rest of her life although Laura admitted to Rose in later years that she never blamed Rose for what happened.

It was interesting to read how Rose encouraged her mother’s writing for years and even helped to “polish” her stories.

Once I finished this book, which was toward the end of the year (2019) I wanted to read the Little House on the Prairie books again (which I did in 2020).

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy reading the Little House on the Prairie books, watching the Little House on the Prairie show from long ago or anyone interested in how Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up and about her relationship with her daughter.

It was a great read, and I would highly recommend it.

What I Did Not Like About Prairie Fires?

There really wasn’t much that I did not like about the book other than the length of it but that was easily overcome by reading it in short spurts.

The book was interesting enough that I kept reading it and I was disciplined enough to finish it.

So overall I don’t have any complaints about it.  I thought it was a good book.
